PV Desk : State Minister of Foreign Affairs Md. Shahriar Alam said the much-awaited Rohingya repatriation is being delayed to ensure safe environment in Myanmar.
He made the remark to reporters while visiting the Madhurchara Rohingya camp with a 32-member delegation of European Union (EU) in Ukhia upazila of Cox’s Bazar on Monday noon (February 12).
Shahriar Alam said a deal has been made with Myanmar to include the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) in the repatriation process. UNHCR will oversee the safety issue. Rushing into the repatriation process might compromise the safety of Rohingyas.
EU delegation chief Jean Lambert said the situation in Myanmar is disconcerting. The EU and International community believes that Myanmar will pave the way for safe return of Rohingyas. However, the action suggests otherwise because Rohingyas fled into Bangladesh following persecution in Myanmar.
