Swiss President leaves Dhaka ending four-day official visit


PV Desk : The President of Switzerland Alain Berset left here this afternoon wrapping up his four-day official visit to Bangladesh.

Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali saw the Swiss President off as the special aircraft of Swiss Air Force carrying Berset and members of his entourage took off from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport at around 1.25 pm.

The Swiss President arrived in Dhaka on February 4 to establish closer ties with Bangladesh and gain a first-hand insight into the ongoing humanitarian refugee crisis that Bangladesh has been facing following huge influx of Rohingyas from Myanmar Rakhine State since August last year.

Berset during his visit to Bangladesh met President Md Abdul Hamid and held official talks with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali also met the Swiss President.

The President of Switzerland paid tribute to the memory of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and martyred freedom fighters by placing wreaths at the portrait of Bangabandhu at Dhanmondi-32 in the city and National Mausoleum in Savar respectively.

Berset visited Kutupalong Rohingya camp in Cox’s Bazar district to have a first-hand report on the plight of Rohingya refugees, who took shelter in the camp following violence in Myanmar’s Rakhine state. He also visited the Cox’s Bazar Sadar hospital which received Swiss contributions.
