PV Desk : A hunger strike by primary school teachers demanding a wage hike has been called off on its third day after a meeting with Primary and Mass Education Minister Mostafizur Rahman.
The minister spoke to protest representatives for an hour-and-a-half on Monday afternoon at Dhaka’s Central Shaheed Minar. The hunger strike ended an hour or so afterwards.
“We have called a halt to our protest based on our discussion with the minister,” said primary teachers union leader Md Shamsuddin.
“The discussion will be continued at a late time.”
The primary teachers were protesting the wage disparity between trained assistant teachers, who receive pay at the 14th wage grade, and head teachers with the same training, who wages at the 11th grade.
The protesters started the hunger strike at Dhaka’s Central Shaheed Minar on Saturday to demand the elevation of trained assistant teachers to the 12th wage grade.
