Awami League still popular in Rangpur, says Quader

PV Desk : Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader says the government remains popular in Rangpur despite the loss of the party’s mayoral candidate in the city corporation elections.
“We are still very popular in Rangpur,” the road transport and bridges minister said.
“Though we lost the mayor’s race, we still have the most councillor seats. Those seats are more important to us and we are still No. 1 among them.”
Quader made the remarks while speaking to reporters regarding the defeat of Awami League candidate and incumbent mayor Sharfuddin Ahmed Jhantu.
The seat in the hometown of HM Ershad was won by Jatiya Party’s candidate Mostafizar Rahman Mostafa by nearly 100,000 votes.
Though elections for councillor posts are not based on party, most of the positions were won by Awami League ward leaders. The Awami League took 14 of the wards, the BNP took eight and the Jatiya Party won two.
