3-day Rajpunnah festival begins Bandarban on Thursday


PV Desk : The 140th Rajpunnah festival, the biggest traditional festival of tribal Bomang community to pay annual land tax to the king, will begin in Bandarban on Thursday.

To mark the three-day occasion, a folk fair will also be held.

The 17th Raja (chief) of Bomang circle Engineer U Chaw Prue will formally collect tax from the inhabitants in a traditional way.

The king along with the Royal guests will arrive at the Raj Durbar amidst sound of bugle. His courtiers and other token soldiers, all attired in traditional dresses, will formally receive the king.

The much-awaited festival, introduced in 1875, is organised mainly for collecting land tax from the inhabitants after harvesting ‘jhum’ crops.

Awami League General Secretary and also Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader will attend the inaugural ceremony as chief guest while State Minister for Chittagong Hill Tracts Affairs Bir Bahadur U Shoi Shing is expected to join the function.
