Bangladesh-Myanmar new treaty in offing for Rohingyas

PV Desk : Bangladesh Foreign Affairs Ministry Secretary Md Shahidul Haque on Saturday (November 11) said that a new agreement will be signed with Myanmar in quest of an effective solution to the Rohingya crisis.

“The draft of the pact has been prepared. It will be signed soon”, he said.

He was addressing a seminar titled ‘Rohingya Crisis: Options for Bangladesh’, at a hotel in Gulshan, organized by Center for Policy Dialogue (CPD).

“We have ensured all sorts of preparation to enforce initiatives for solving Rohingya problem. Moreover, efforts are on to solve the problem in peaceful manner.”

“Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali will hold meeting with the Myanmar authority in Naypyidaw on November 23, during his Myanmar visit”, he informed.

Shahidul further said we should keep in mind that Myanmar is our neighbor, in spite of all the inconsistencies. Therefore the Rohingya problem should be handled, maintaining good ties with them.

However, about 600,000 Rohingya have fled to Bangladesh to avoid atrocities in Myanmar following an upsurge in Rakhine state late August. The influx still continues.
