Two sentenced to die for Gazipur murder

PV Desk : A Gazipur court has sentenced two people to death for the 2016 murder of workshop mechanic Ujjal Chandra Manidas.

The verdict was announced by the Gazipur District and Sessions Judge’s Court on Tuesday.

The court also fined the two convicts Tk 10,000. The two were also given five years in prison and Tk 2,000 over another charge. A failure to pay the fine will result in an additional month in prison.

A third suspect in the case was acquitted. All three suspects were present in court at the time of the verdict.

The death row convicts are Shakil, 20, and Sanjiban Chandra, 23.

A relative of the victim had been romantically involved with Sanjiban, leading to an argument between them, said the court’s Additional Public Prosecutor Md Hariz Uddin Ahmed.

On Nov 17, 2016 Shakil and Sanjiban called Manidas to a local cremation ground, slit his throat and threw the body into the Sitalakhya River. The two then sold Manidas’s phone to a man, named Bhabatosh Mollik.
