7 DB men land in jail


PV Desk : A Cox’s Bazar court on Thursday (October 26) sent the seven members of the Detective Branch (DB) of Police to jail on charge of kidnapping a businessman and taking Tk. 17 lakh as ransom.
The cops were detained on Wednesday (October 25) with the Tk. 17 lakh in Cox’s Bazar half an hour after the DB men released a businessman who was abducted by them on Tuesday (October 24).
Additional judge of the Judicial Magistrate Court of Cox’s Bazar Mosharraf Hossain sent the cops to jail, rejecting their bail prayers in a case filed for kidnapping the businessman. They were produced before the court at noon.
Additional superintendent of police (ASP) of Cox’s Bazar Afruzul Haq Tutul confirmed the matter.
The seven cops are- sub-inspector (SI) of Cox’s Bazar BD Moniruzzaman, SI Abul Kalam Azad and SI Firoz Ahmad, assistant sub-inspectors (ASI) Mostafa and Alauddin, Constables Mostafa Azam and Al Amin.
The seven DB men abducted businessman Abdul Gafur, younger brother of Teknaf municipality mayor Moniruzzaman, from the district town and demanded Tk. 50 lakh as ransom.
After receiving Tk. 17 lakh as the ransom money, the detectives freed the businessman in Marine Drive area at Teknaf upazila in the district. Hours after the release, Abdul Gafur filed a case with Teknaf police station against the DB men.
A team of army personnel arrested the seven DB men with the ransom money. One of them managed to flee. Later, the seven cops were suspended.
