Naturalist Dwijen Sharma passes away


PV Desk : Veteran naturalist, botanist and writer Prof Dwijen Sharma died on Friday (September 15).He was 88.
Family sources said that Sharma breathed his last at Birdem Hospital in Dhaka, in the morning.
Earlier, he was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Critical Care Medicine department of Birdem on August 18, as he was suffering from pneumonia.
Earlier, he was admitted to the same hospital on July 23, as his lung was infected and he was also suffering from various old-age complications.
Afterwards, his physical condition developed to some extent after taking him at ICU on July 29.
Sharma was born in Shimulia village under Barlekha upazila of Moulvibazar, on May 29, 1929.
Sharma was fondly called ‘The son of Nature’ and he was thought to be a living encyclopedia of the flora in the Indian subcontinent.
Sharma received his bachelor’s degree from City College of Kolkata and master’s degree in Botany from University of Dhaka in 1958.
He then joined Brojomohun College, Barisal.
In 1962, he left Barisal and joined Notre Dame College in Dhaka where he worked until 1974.
