National Mourning Day observed in Ctg

PV Desk : People of Chittagong city and its adjacent areas today observed the 42nd martyrdom anniversary of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman with a fresh call for executing the verdict of Bangabandhu murder case by bringing back the fugitive convicted killers of Bangabandhu and his family members.

Apart from the Chittagong city, north and south district units of Awami League (AL) and its front organisations, different socio-cultural organisations, trade unions, district administration and professional bodies organised separate discussion meetings marking the day.

Leaders and workers of AL and its front organisations and professional bodies wore black badges throughout the day.

The day’s programmes included hoisting of the national and black flags at half-mast atop all party offices, placing wreaths at the portrait of Bangabandhu, Qurankhwani, Milad Mahfil, discussion meetings, poetry recitation, essay and quiz competitions life and activities of Bangabandhu, exhibition of films, playing of the historic March 7 speeches of Bangabandhu in 41 wards of the city corporation, blood donation and distribution of foods among the destitute.

Black flags dominated the skyline of the port city and the national flag was hoisted half-mast atop the government and private buildings while mourners placed wreaths at the portrait of Bangabandhu.

Qurankhwani, Milad Mahfil, discussion meetings, voluntary blood donation and distribution of foods among the destitute were other programmes to mark the day.

Hundreds of followers of AL gathered at the party office in the morning to place wreaths at the portrait of Bangabandhu. The historic March 7 speech of Bangabandhu was played through loudspeakers on the port city streets.

Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) also observed the day through various programmes including human chain, Doa and Milad Mahfil, discussion meetings in at 41 wards, hoisting of national flag half mast at its all ward offices, special programme at the corporation-run forkania madrasah compounds, poetry recitations, essay competitions in its all schools and colleges.

Chittagong mayor AJM Nasir Uddin addressed the functions as the chief guest. To mark the day, Chittagong city AL organised a discussion on the life and works of Bangabandhu.

A “Chittagonian traditional Mezban” was arranged for nearly 30,000 people at Tungipara of Gopalganj district on the occasion of the 42nd martyrdom anniversary of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

Former CCC Mayor and President of Chittagong City AL ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury has been organizing the Mezban since last 27 years.

Chittagong north and south district AL chalked out elaborate programmes at upazila and union levels which included discussion meetings on the life and works of Bangabandhu.

Doa and Milad Mahfils were held at different mosques and other places of worships in the city and districts seeking eternal peace of the departed souls of Bangabandhu and his family members, who were assassinated in the fateful night on August 15, 1975.

Chittagong District Administration also organised a discussion meeting on the occasion at city’s Shilpakala Academy with Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Zillur Rahman Chowdhury in the chair.

Chittagong District Administration organised various programmes including Milad Mahfil, Khatme Quran, special prayers at mosques and discussion on the life and works of Bangabandhu at Shisu Academy.

Essay competition and poetry recitation were also organised marking the day. The upazila administration and upazila units of AL and its front organisations and Muktijuddha Sangsad also observed the day through elaborate programmes at all upazila headquarters.

Chittagong District Bar Association also organised a discussion meeting on the life and works of Bangabandhu and arranged Milad Mahfil at its auditorium.

Chittagong University (CU), Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology (CUET), Chittagong Veterinary and Animal Science University (CVASU), University of Chittagong Science and Technology (USTC), Chittagong Divisional Sports Organisations and different colleges and private universities organised separate discussion meetings and Milad Mahfils in observance of the day.

Chittagong city AL, Jubo League and Chhatra League also arranged separate discussions marking the day.

Chittagong Press Club and Chittagong Union of Journalists (CUJ) observed the National Mourning Day through organising various programmes including Doa Mahfil and discussion meetings.

Chittagong Press Club placed wreaths at the portrait of Bangabandhu on the club premises at 11 am.

Local dailies brought out special supplements, while Chittagong centers of Bangladesh Television and Bangladesh Betar aired special programmes highlighting the significance of the day.

Meanwhile, city units of Bangladesh Communist Party, Gono Forum, Sector Commanders’ Forum, Bangladesh Shishu Academy, Islamic Foundation, Civil Surgeon office, Chittagong, Bangabandhu Parishad Chittagong, Sheikh Rasel Smriti Parishad, Greater Chittagong Development Action Council, Projonmo-71 and Shahid Smriti Pathagar also arranged different discussion meetings and Doa Mahfil in observance of the day.
