PV International Desk : Senior leader of the Pakistan Muslim League (PML-N) and former petroleum minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi will run the PML-N government as interim prime minister of Pakistan until Nawaz Sharif’s brother Shahbaz Sharif is elected as MP.
The PML-N leaders on Saturday (July 29) took the decision in a meeting held in Islamabad headed by ousted Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, reports the DAWN of Pakistan and other Pakistani media.
The PML-N decided to appoint Shahbaz Sharif as prime minister. But Shahbaz can’t immediately replace his brother as he is not an MP. In order to become the prime minister, he would have to be elected first.
In this backdrop, Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, who was the petroleum minister till Friday, was tapped to take over as interim prime minister till the time Shahbaz is elected to the Parliament, and then to the prime minister’s office.
