CCCI boss concerned over cargo vessel workers’ strike

PV Report : Chittagong Chamber Of Commerce & Industry(CCCI) President Mahbub Alam expressed concern over the work stoppage by cargo vessel workers.

In a statement, he said transportation of as well as supply of foodstuff, essential commodities and raw industrial materials would be affected seriously due to planned strike by cargo vessel workers federation.

Thousands of people at flood-affected and haor areas have been living in an inhuman condition due to heavy downpour and on rush of hilly waters. Their sufferings would intensify with the strike to begin from July 24 which could lead to great misery, he asserted.

The Chamber boss also said an additional 15 to 20 days are required recently to clear cargo due to ship-jam at outer anchorage of the Chittagong Port. As a result, import cost including demurrage charge is being increased. The proposed strike would create deadlock at other river ports including Narayanganj, Ashuganj, Noapara and Chandpur ports resulting in negative impacts on national economy, he added.
