Bangladeshi jailed for raping tourist in Singapore

PV Desk : A Bangladeshi man has been sentenced to 11 years in prison in Singapore for the rape of a Chinese tourist, reports the Straits Times.

Construction supervisor Hossain Anowar, 32, will also receive nine strokes of a cane.

The victim, a Chinese woman, was visiting her husband, an expatriate worker, in Geylang, a township in Singapore, when she was set upon by their co-tenant Anowar.

According to the report, Anowar knocked on their door on Feb 29, 2016, holding a toothbrush while the woman’s husband was at work. She opened the door to offer him toothpaste. He latched the door behind him and raped her twice. Anowar was arrested the same night.

Anowar initially claimed he had paid her for sex but confessed following the victim’s cross-examination.

The victim said she was traumatised by the incident, becoming withdrawn and insecure. After returning home to China, she installed cameras around her home.
