Food minister hints to waive tax on rice import


PV Desk : Food minister Quamrul Islam indicated that the tax on rice importation might be removed.

The minister commented that some unscrupulous and BNP-backed businessmen are responsible for the rising of rice price.

He was addressing at a discussion organized by Bangladesh Swadhinota Parishad, at the National Press club, marking Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s release day from jail, on Friday (June 16)

The minister said, “I agree that the price of rice is somewhat increasing. But, there have been conspiracy behind it.  Some unscrupulous businessmen, mill owners, hoarder and some pro-BNP businessman made tricks to increase the price of rice.

Citing that there is no dearth of rice in the country, he said, “Steps have been taken against the unscrupulous businessmen. The price of rice will be down soon.”

“We will eliminate the tax imposed on rice importation. No plot could defeat us”, he added.

Awami League Publication and Publicity secretary Hasan Mahmud, World University Bangladesh Vice chancellor Abdul Mannan Chowdhury, Golam Kuddus from Sammilito Sangskritik Jote, MA Karim, Arun Sarker Rana and Poet Kazi Rozi were among others present there.
