Landslides death toll reaches 89


PV Report : At least 89 people including four army personnel were killed in landslides caused by incessant torrential rain and stormy weather in three hill districts—Rangamati, Bandarban and Chittagong since Monday night (June 12).

Till 1:30 pm Tuesday (June 13), fire service workers recovered 75 bodies and fear more casualties.

Of the 60 killed, 44 were in Rangamati, 6 in Bandarban and 25 in Chittagong.

 Six persons including three underage siblings were killed in landslides separately in Kala Ghata, Kaching Ghata and Lemujhiri area in Bandarban town on early Tuesday (June 13).

The deceased were identified as Kamrunnahar Begum, 40, her daughter Sukhia Begum, 8, and three siblings–Shuvo Barua, 8, Mithu Barua, 6, and Lata Barua from Agapara area of Lemujhiri, and Reba Tripura, 18, from Kala Ghata graveyard area,

However, Bir Bahadur Tripura, Proshen Tripura and Surya Chakma from Kala Ghata, and Lal Mohon Barua, father of the three ill-fated children were injured in the landslides.

Another two deceased were unidentified yet.

Bandarban Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) M Rafiq Ullah confirmed the matter.

In Rangamati, at least 44 people were killed in landslides and crashed under uprooted tree in Rangamati town and Kaptai upazila.

The deceased were identified as Nuria Akter, Aius Mallik, Ruma Akter, Amit Chakma, Hazera Begum, Liton Mallik, Chumki Das, Sonali Chakma from Vedvedi area in the town and Nicky Marma and Anuching Marma in Karigor Para of Kaptai upazila, according to sources from Rangamati Sadar Hospital.
